COMMUNITY AND LONG-TERM SUPPORT

With millions of individuals expected to develop Alzheimer’s disease as the baby boomer generation ages, the demand for long-term care will escalate rapidly.

There will be an even greater need for affordable, high quality, long-term care at home, in the community and in residential care facilities. Today, the annual cost of a nursing home for a person with dementia averages $42,000 and can easily exceed $70,000 in many places. Few families are able to pay for all of the care needed without considerable financial hardship.

Likewise, there will be an even greater need for caregiver support. Today, nearly 15 million caregivers work to meet the needs of their loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Eighty percent of care provided at home is delivered by family caregivers, often placing emotional, physical and financial stress on those involved. A caregiver’s health, employment situation and financial security often suffer as a result of their responsibilities.
